Dragon Boating Barcelona. Dragon boat racing is the world’s fastest growing water sport. It originates from China and the legend of one man, Qu Yuan, who was a popular politician and poet 2000 years ago.
Disillusioned by the political future of his province and in his despair, he committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo river. Upon hearing of this tragic act, local fisherman jumped into their long narrow canoes and raced out to save him. They never found his body and legend has it, that the river dragon took away the body and spirit of this much loved and noble statesman.
In many parts of China and Asia on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, dragon boat races are held to celebrate this tragic event. Today dragon boat racing is a great team sport and is enjoyed by millions of people every year.
If you decide to come to Barcelona and go Dragon Boating, what can you expect?
- The use of 3 or 4 boats of 10 seats (+ 1 drummer in each boat)
- life jackets and all necessary safety equipment
- The services of an experienced helms person and rescue boat and captain for your safety.
- Drinking water during the event
The format of the event will be:
- Introduction to instructors and the day’s activities.
- Warm-up exercise session.
- Introduction to dragon boats and safety procedures.
- Break (drinking water provided by BDB’s).
- Review safety and emergency procedures.
- Practice consisting of:
Land practice – paddling, drumming, starting a race, etc.
Paddlers stroke and race start practice
A gentle 250m practice paddle,
Ten minute break (in boats).
Followed by 250m practice race.
- Final 250m fun races.
- Presentation of medals to the winning team.
